A Collection of Impression From Seals of the Wa Chief at Kawashan The Wa ethnic group has a population of 350,000. They are mainly located in Canyuan, Ximeng lancang, Menglian Gengma Zhengkang and Shuangjiang of Yunnan Province. The Wa language belongs to the South Asian Language family. In 1935,Fang Guoyu, a famous historian, was involved in the southern boundary settlement between China and Burma. Wa chiefs from Banhong (a place name meaning a banyan-growing area) and Kawashan (now Gengam, Canyuan and Mengding) came with their seals to show their allegiance. Fang Guoyu took impressions from all the seals and commented,"I do not understand these characters, which are different from Han characters, Dai Burmers words. The local told me that they could not understand these characters either. They only knew that got these seals during the Han Dynasty but did know which years. They have had these seals since the Han Dynasty".
